Guide to Ski Jackets

You've finally booked the ski holiday and despite the excitement of heading to the mountains, you need to remember some important items off your check list. Arguably the most obvious item is your ski jacket; temperatures in the Alps can reach as little as -14°C whilst the USA and Canada plummet to -30°C throughout the ski season so looking for a jacket is as crucial as ensuring your passport is up to date.

There are key factors you need to consider when you look to buy a ski jacket; obviously you want the jacket to be practical and stylish whilst affordable and long-lasting. If you follow these key points, you're sure to find that perfect ski jacket to hit the slopes.

1. Waterproof- Windproof - Breathable: The weather can change rapidly on the top of a mountain so it is essential your jacket needs to meet these three requirements. As you sweat, your jacket needs to release the moisture from within the jacket to keep you dry but needs to also protect you from the weather's elements from the outside in. Many jackets now have zips under the armpits so that you can allow ventilation when required.

2. Layering: Depending on the type of jacket, be sure to wear at least 2 layers underneath such as thermals and fleeces.

3. Size: The worst thing you can do is to buy a jacket that is the wrong size and either be lost inside it or worse still; have bare skin on show!! Make sure you try the jacket before you buy!

4. Seams and Zips: Make sure that the seams and the zips on the ski jacket are completely covered and sealed.

5. Pockets: You will need many pockets on the inside and outside of the ski jacket so that you can carry your money, lift pass, mobile phone, sunscreen etc.

6. Price: It is easy to get sucked into buying an expensive, exclusively branded ski jacket, however, look around to find the best deals; most ski jackets offer the same features as each other.
